The Edge, recently awarded a prestigious Saltire Housing Award, showcases our most minimal and understated kitchen ever; the property was named 'The Edge' due to its seemingly precipitous location at the brink of a 42m high greywacke cliff high above the sea, with the result that it appears to float on the edge. Combining high gloss, ice white, lacquered units with graphite black Atag apliances (compact steam oven, combi oven micro and coffee machine) and a titanium work surface, the brief was for an understated and minimal kitchen to minimise the visual impact on the open-plan living space and to be consistent with the 'floating' design concept which continues throughout the property.
The brief was achieved by; recessing the full height, handleless, units within the plane of the wall; undermounting the sink, electrical socket housing and hob into the worktop so that they sit flush with the work surface; specifying a compact range of appliances; and by suspending the centre island units on a 200mm laminated pillar with the water, waste and power feeds concealed inside which allows natural light to flood in across the black basalt floor. The island units are comprised solely of drawers, also handleless, fitted with Blum Motion electric openers - a light touch opens the drawers automatically. The suspended dishwasher is by Fisher & Paykel and the sculptural and monolithic island is wrapped in 12mm Caesarstone (Titanium). We are delighted that the kitchen has been, at their request, featured in Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine (Issue 85). Project price £42K
